Greetings from Gayleen

June 2025

Colin and I are enjoying our travels throughout regional Queensland and have so far travelled over 6,000 km and ventured west through Georgetown, Croydon and Normanton/Kurumba before heading to Mount Isa and Cloncurry and then back to the east stopping in Julia Creek, Richmond, Hughenden and Charters Towers before heading to the coast to Townsville, Ayr , The Whitsundays, Mackay and Rockhampton regions. We then made our way inland to central Queensland to Biloela and Emerald, Longreach and Winton, Boulia and Bedourie. We have travelled this week to Barcaldine, Blackall and are currently in Charleville. Towing our caravan we have enjoyed overnight stops in each of the towns and many smaller townships along the way.

It’s great to see the recovery of the regions from the record-breaking floods of just a few months ago. 13 million hectares were inundated and many stock were lost but the outback towns have all rallied and are welcoming tourists back. They really need our support at this time. Restoration of the loss of precious 20 – 40 cm of topsoil in the channel country is underway and the roads restoration, particularly on the Diamantina Development Road has restored access to the hardest hit regions. We have been really impressed with the condition of all the outback roads we have travelled and the country after all the rain is looking fantastic.

The Charity Cattle Drive is making its way from Longreach to Roma covering 775 Kilometres over 85 days. This week we followed the route from Tambo to Augathella and crossed paths with some of the horses in preparation for the drive. The Cattle Drive is to support the many thousands of Queenslanders who are experiencing food insecurity and hunger every day.  There are many ways to support the drive including to buy a saddle and join the drive for a few days or you can adopt a steer or just make a donation.
