Daria’s Perspective

Fear and You

“I have learned over the years that when one’s mind is made up, this diminishes fear.” — Rosa Parks

I don’t know about you but I am tired of everything on the TV and in social media telling me I need to be afraid. Even if it is done quietly it has always been there. Slowly over the years, building momentum.  Here are a few reminders; the Red Scare and the Cold War in the 50s and 60s, then Plane Hijackings in the 70s, then HIV and Aids in the 80s, then Mad Cow Disease in the 90s and then Terror Attacks starting off the 2000s following up with COVID. All the while, wars and school shootings and crazy natural disasters were always happening. Fear! Fear! Fear! And it is not going to stop any time soon.

I know what you are thinking. Wow, Daria you are usually a lot more positive. Well I am going to tell you the truth. Rosa Parks who was in a very horrible time of history made a huge impact to spark a whole movement for civil rights. And how did she do this? She was tired and didn’t want to get up out of a bus seat. The main thing is, she was just tired! And her fatigue of what the world was throwing at her made her make up her mind and not budge from a bus seat and that made all the fear disappear when she was arrested. And from that she started a revolution!

Fear can stop you on so many levels from living your life fully. I will give you an example, when I lived in NYC I noticed that the city had a way to steal your time, energy, mental health and resources, and make you feel like you were getting nothing back.  It was actually changing my personality from a loving person to someone who couldn’t stand people.  So one day I declared that I was going to live the life I wanted while I was there not what it gave me. In other words like Rosa Parks I made up my mind and I was just plain tired. I told it I would enjoy the things I wanted to enjoy and spend time with the people I wanted to spend time with and get the most out of what it had to offer, and I did.

Fear permeates all around us, but we don’t have to give in to it. Make up your mind today and tell that thing that you fear, and has been holding you back, that it has no power over you and start moving towards a better life.
