Whether you read my article or not, I thought I’d try something different this month. Since this is a newsletter that helps people find work, maybe it’s time we all re-evaluate our Career Values.
Come on—this will be fun!
It’s simple:
Take a piece of paper and write at the top: “Never Valued” and “Always Valued.”
(Yes, there are shades of grey, but let’s be honest—most of us either value something or we don’t.)
Then, look at the values below and place them under whichever column feels right for you.
Career Values List
- Structure & Stability: Enjoying predictable routines, clear expectations, and job security.
- Spirituality & Integrity: Working in a setting that respects your beliefs and values honesty.
- Creativity & Innovation: Engaging in artistic or creative work, experimenting with new ideas, and finding opportunities for self-expression.
- Relationships & Community: Building friendships, working in a team, contributing to society, and being part of something bigger.
- Physical Challenge & Adventure: Thriving on active roles, excitement, or risk-taking.
- Environment & Aesthetics: Protecting nature, appreciating beauty, or working in inspiring surroundings.
- Helping & Leading: Supporting others directly, influencing outcomes, or guiding a team.
- Work-Life Balance: Having time for family, hobbies, and personal well-being.
- Learning & Growth: Seeking knowledge, facing challenging problems, and tackling steep learning curves.
- Recognition & Status: Receiving credit for your work, earning respect, and feeling valued.
- Independence & Time Freedom: Controlling your schedule and determining how you work.
- Excitement & Variety: Enjoying change, fast-paced settings, or roles with novelty and drama.
- Practicality & Results: Producing tangible outcomes that feel useful or make a difference.
- Financial Rewards: Earning enough to feel secure and enjoy life’s luxuries.
I know that’s still a lot to think about!
So, pour yourself a glass of your favourite beverage and sit somewhere quiet. Take a few moments to decide which career values are most important to you at this stage of your life.
It’s worth it. You might just discover something new and wonderful about yourself!
