Battle the Noise

“Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your inner voice.” Steve Jobs

There is so much noise going on in the world right now and people are trying to reach for so many things to feel complete. And yet at the same time there is so much information on meditation and mindfulness being pumped out daily. We are told we should enjoy life and keep calm but, don’t stop until you reach the top.

We are getting used to being in this constant state of flux, but it is not good for us. We have more medical advancements, medications and preventative information than ever before and yet we are still troubled. We get news on super foods that are good for us one day then are toxic for us the next. We are told we should be going back to the old remedies and solutions but can’t live a second without our phones and technology.

We are told we should know ourselves but don’t have time to do real soul searching. We are told we should not be self-absorbed and care more for the earth and the environment but at the same time go for our dreams and that we deserve as much self-care as possible. What is happening?

Noise. Noise. Noise. Noise.

So how do you battle the noise?

  • Patience extends to you too. In other words, stop rushing into decisions based on who the noise tells you to be. It takes a lifetime to learn who you truly are.
  • Make the word ‘no’ your friend. It can take you to greater places and experiences than the word yes.
  • Learn to love the quiet. Start small. Early in the morning or late at night when there is less competition for your attention. Then learn to expand on that in moments of your day. While in your car. While doing the dishes. While putting on your shoes. Just be quiet and listen and be.
  • I know, I know again one of those things that seem airy fairy but it is an amazing tool. You can literally pour all the noise out onto paper and get it out of your head. Ask yourself the questions you have been avoiding. No one will see it but you. Believe me, after that there will be healing and lightness that the noise can’t take away from you.

In conclusion I think the first step is to just acknowledge all the competing noises in your life and sift through what you will and will not accept as part of your life. For instance, I don’t allow anyone to make me afraid of things I have no control over so that noise is tuned out. You need to decide for yourself but knowing the noise even exists and competing for your attention is a start. Good luck.
