Greetings from Gayleen

February 2025

We are pleased to bring you a snapshot of the latest economic news, recruitment trends and upcoming events across vibrant regional Queensland.

February saw an increase in job advertisements across Australia, reflecting a robust labour market. Vacancy numbers are approximately 31% higher than the monthly average in 2019 – considered a norm year for comparison. Queensland, experienced a 0.2% rise in employment during the same period, adding 6,600 positions. The Health Care & Social Assistance sector remains the strongest driver of employment opportunities followed by Professional & Technical Services, Education & Training, Accommodation & Food Services. Emerging industries include renewable energy, critical minerals and the bioeconomy. Tourism is highlighted as an ongoing strength sector for regional Queensland.

As the federal election approaches, major political parties have outlined policies with potential implications for employment. All parties have started their campaigning with the promises of big spending and economical stimulus.

The Australian Electoral Commission (AEC) is offering up to 100,000 paid temporary positions for the upcoming federal election.

Recent flood events were widespread and affected most of regional Queensland, particularly in the North where all roads were cut, and rail remains cuts after 6 weeks. This sadly affected many people whose homes and businesses were inundated by flood water. Supermarkets were completely bare for weeks on end. If there was a positive outcome from this disastrous event it was the national spotlight of the condition and restrictions of our roads and ensuing consequences of having all freights routes closed. Government is now pledging funding for the upgrading and sealing of roads. It is hoped with the upcoming election additional funding promises will be made for the security of infrastructure, supplies and resources for much neglected regional and remote areas of Queensland.

A much-anticipated interest rate reduction by the Reserve Bank is expected to stimulate economic activity, potentially leading to increased hiring across various sectors. It is hoped that lower borrowing costs will encourage business expansion and consumer spending, contributing to job creation in regional and rural areas.
