rrrrrrrrrrMay was kicked off with the Labour Day Holiday long weekend and I thought you may be interested to know the history of this important day. Labour Day in Australia commemorates the achievements of organised labour to implement the eight-hour day in the middle of the nineteenth century when previously workers were required to work 10 – 12 hours a day for six days a week. We have come a long way in Australia with our work-life balance since then. The National Employment Scheme, NES and Fair work Act protect all workers’ rights and continue to assess what is fair in the modern workforce. Not only are our work hours legislated but so are our conditions of employment including personal leave entitlements and our salaries. Discrimination has been legislated against and Work Health, Environment and Safety regulations have become the norm for every modern workplace.  So, we do have a lot to be thankful for in our workplace.

I have just completed two government tenders that require a myriad of compliance to standards of employment, legislation and policies. While responding to modern tenders is a lot of work and red tape for any business, I do appreciate the adherence to good governance for business operations and protection it provides all employees including casuals.

We are excited to support the upcoming Doomadgee NAIDOC Gala Ball with both a financial donation and the team donating gowns. What a great event that has gained worldwide attention. The girls look just beautiful and proud in their gowns and they are also looking for suitable attire to dress the men too. The ball will be held in the community in July.

Colin and I have just begun the first week of a trip to visit some of our clients in regional Queensland. We will travel over 9000ks and visit 32 shire regions in some of the most remote areas of Queensland. While it is a very busy time often travelling up to 400ks in a day, it is great to be out in our beautiful and diverse state and to be reminded of the many small communities that are the backbone of Queensland and Australia. This past week we have travelled south through Hinchinbrook the Burdekin, Whitsunday, Mackay, Rockhampton, Banana and Burnett shires. The country overall, on this leg of our journey is looking in good condition and restocked with cattle, but we have noted that some areas are sadly most definitely still in drought.  We note the roads are busy with many caravanners and holidays makers exploring our own back yard, which is great to see and good for the communities economic Covid recovery.
