Daria’s Perspective
The Importance of Goal Setting
By Daria Campbell
Yes, the world is crazy right now, but because of that, this is the time more than ever that you should set goals.
Yes, things are uncertain, but you still have to live your life one day at a time and setting goals are one of the best ways to do that.
Living in expectation is an interesting phenomenon. When you are expectant you tend to be more focused and committed to things. When you expect things to happen, for situations to present themselves, for hopes and dreams to become a reality then you live life in a more fulfilling way.
Let’s say worst case scenario you never accomplish your goals. Yes, it is disappointing but how can you know if you reached them or not if you have never set them? And research shows time and time again that if you set goals with a deadline (which can always be altered, by the way), write them down, hang them up somewhere you see them every day and tell someone about your goals so that you are accountable for them, they usually happen.
So as a Recruitment Consultant, I am going to encourage all of you who are in work or looking for work today to write down your goals about what you want out of life. How you do it is up to you. How you break it down is up to you. There are many tips and hints out there in cyberspace for you to access. But I can tell you from experience that if you look at your life on a regular basis and decide what you want out of it you will be better off in the long run.
“But I don’t know what I want out of life, Daria.” Well, if you are saying that it is understandable so let me ask you this: What don’t you want in your life? If you know what you don’t want, then you can look to the opposite of that and figure out what you do want.
I have used goal setting time and time again and it has never failed me. When I moved back to Australia from NYC because of Covid-19 the first thing I did was write down all the aspects of my perfect role. Eight months later after becoming a Recruitment Consultant, I revisited that list and out of 12 items I had accomplished 11, and the one I didn’t get was really not that important to me.
So keep the faith people and set your goals. Don’t let the world dictate to you what you want out of your life as you only get one ride. Make it count.
